The Trust was set up in 1973 with money bequeathed to the Society by the late John Clark of San Diego California.
Its aims are:
- To help enrich the cultural life and heritage of Scotland
- To cultivate public interest in the history and culture of Scotland by such means as visiting and preserving places of historic and national interest
- To cooperate with other charitable trusts in promoting such objectives
- To assist where appropriate in offering help to underprivileged young people, the elderly and any suffering from illness or any other incapacity
- To contribute to the advancement of education and training particularly where this is relevant to the above aims
